CHARACTER INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Ren Amamiya (Protagonist)
CANON: Persona 5 Royal
TIMELINE: Just before the collapse of Maruki’s Palace
AGE: 17

REFERENCE: At the wiki!

PERSONALITY:
Like all Persona protagonists, Ren Amamiya is a (mostly) silent protagonist. He has several voiced lines in actuality, and more of a defined personality than some of the earlier protagonists. I'll be taking him from the true ending, which requires him to make certain pivotal choices and reach max confidant links with certain people he knows. To be fair, "silent" protagonist may not be far off how he is described in universe. He's often noted to be unassuming and soft-spoken by other characters.

While he's absolutely the quietest among his friends, Ren isn't boring by any means. Many of the things he can and does say to other lean towards teasing and silly, even in moments when he's meant to be serious. He's also extremely prone to taunting enemies in battle, though not in a malicious way. He's extremely intelligent and imaginative, and he was one of the first to realize that the traitor was, in fact, a traitor. Morgana frequently praises him for always doing things diligently and finding new ways to overcome obstacles if he fails the first time, and the original character designer noted that Ren is "the type who plans things but does not talk about them".

While Ren has every reason to distrust others, he never leans into that. Instead, he chooses to trust. In the game it's noted that the only other person in P5R who may have the unique "Wild Card" ability only received two Persona because he wasn't able to trust and open up to others, so he received two only: one for his hate, and one for his lies. Ren, by contrast, can contract over 200 persona by virtue of being open and willing to reach out and make bonds of all sorts. Ren's ability to trust others is frankly ridiculous, even if he is reasonably cautious about it...usually.

In his persona as Joker, Ren is confident to the point of seeming perhaps overconfident, reckless and quietly amused at the world. His entire posture relaxes even further as Joker and his teammates frequently accuse him of "showing off" and he is very reckless and willing to commit to insane schemes in order to "win". No matter what sort of danger he's put in as a Phantom Thief, Ren rarely seems that phased, and he always remains confident and cocky even when he's staring down death in the face. While the quiet and well-mannered side of Ren isn't a lie, exactly, it definitely can end up masking his core - and he does play up the façade to a degree, frequently trying to appear as a normal student throughout the course of the game so as not to risk discovery of his Phantom Thieves activities.

Part of the "rebellious trickster" piece of his personality is that Ren doesn't have much respect for society's rules and systems due to how he and the other Phantom Thieves have been abused by that same system. Despite this it is noted many times in the game that he's extremely upright and has strong morals: he just doesn't always think that the "right" thing is the "legal" thing, and due to the corruption in the government and adults seen in Persona 5 Royal, he's not incorrect in his canon. He has his own honor code, and one of his confidants (Iwai) even says that if everyone in the world kept to the same honor code Ren uses, guns wouldn't be necessary. He always strives to help others and to do the "right" thing, even if the world may see that thing as wrong, and Ren doesn't usually seem all that interested in personal gain and doesn't seem as invested in the Phantom Thieves' fame. His teammates frequently note that once Ren has made up his mind, there's no changing it, and while he's quiet he's strong, courageous, and determined. At one point Goro notes he's jealous of Ren's "free heart", where he doesn't let how others view him chain him down - and the world does try to chain Ren down, many times, but he never so much as bends.

His sense of honor and morals is only amplified by his kindness. Many of his teammates and confidants note that Ren has immeasurable kindness and that he's very willing to go to the ends of the earth for his friends. His desire to help people in need was even the catalyst for awakening his Persona, and was why he was framed for assault. His bonds with other people are very important to Ren, to the point that in his "ideal" reality (a fake built in dreams) he is able to remain living in Leblanc forever, remaining friends with everyone - including Goro, the traitor.

ABILITIES:
Gently lifts from my Erku power section:

STUDENT BY DAY: Ren's social stats are maxed at his canon point, which means he has the highest Knowledge/Kindness/Proficiency/Guts/Charm possible, which really just means he's intelligent, fearless, good with his hands, charismatic, and very empathetic. He's also apparently a very good dancer, for whatever that's worth.

PHANTOM THIEF: While he usually dresses up in his Joker persona clothes to do Phantom Thief things, the skills carry over. Ren is extremely acrobatic and capable of jumping around/over/through things as well as scaling pretty much whatever. He's also proficient with guns and daggers.

CONFIDANT SKILLS: One of the main systems of Persona 5 Royal is the Confidant system. It involves "ranking up" social links with other characters, for a maximum of 10 ranks. These ranks give various benefits, but one of the main ones is teaching the protagonist new skills, some of which would have no effect outside of canon but some of which would be useful elsewhere, such as:
FOOL: The Fool confidant teaches Ren to use WILD TALK, which allows him to negotiate with enemies he holds up with a gun (as in "STOP! THIS IS A HOLD UP!), where he can try to convince enemies to lend him their strength, give him a money bribe to let them go, or give him an item. The Fool also allows him to use THIRD EYE, which allows him to see things that can't usually be seen with the naked eye - not like, x-ray vision or ghosts, but it sort of highlights things useful for thieves: entry and exit points, places to climb, and expensive treasure to steal.
MAGICIAN: The Magician confidant teaches Ren how to make ACE TOOLS, which is basically a lot of infiltration/battle tools: Lockpick/Eternal Lockpick (opens chests), Calming Aroma & Convertizer (lowers enemie's detection rate), Goho-M (leave dungeon), Smokescreen (avoids enemy detection for 30 seconds), Hypno Mist (puts surrounding enemies to sleep), Reverse Ammo (restores gun ammo), Treasure trap (increases chance to encounter treasure demon), Vanish Ball (flee from battle), Spotlight & Limelight (draws enemy attention), and various bombs which cause elemental damages. The Magician also allows him to use PICKPOCKET, which lets him steal items when he preforms melee/physical attacks sometimes.
EMPRESS: The Empress confidant teaches Ren to use SHADOW CALCULUS, which allows him to see the skills of enemies as well as their potential item drops, while SHADOW FACTORIZATION allows him to see what sort of damage will work, will be repelled, or will be absorbed when looking at a target in battle.
HIEROPHANT: The Hierophant confidant teaches Ren COFFEE MASTERY, which allows him to make coffee that greatly restores magical energy to one person and/or just tastes good, as well as CURRY MASTERY, which allows him to make curry which does the same but for multiple allies.
CHARIOT: The Chariot confidant teaches Ren STEALTH DASH, which allows him to sprint without being easily noticed by enemies and INSTA-KILL, which occasionally allows him to instantly kill enemies he dashes into.
JUSTICE: The Justice confidant teaches Ren SLEUTHING MASTERY, which has a chance to reveal all of a single enemie's strengths/weaknesses elementally at the start of a battle.
TOWER: The Tower confidant teaches Ren all his gun skills, which include: DOWN SHOT, a special ability that allows him to knock an enemy down to their knees which is upgraded by CHEAP SHOT allowing him to use it more frequently; BULLET HAIL, which allows his party to occasionally enter a gun-based assault on enemies at the start of an ambush and is upgraded by ELECTRIC SLUG for more damage; WARNING SHOT, which just fires a shot to scare enemies during negotiations to make things easier; STAINED COATING, which increases the chance of inflicting status ailments with bullets; and finally ODA SPECIAL which allows Ren's gun attacks to ignore resistances and hit the enemy even if they're strong against guns.
SUN: The Sun confidant teaches Ren various skills that all effect the options for Wild Talk/hold-ups. These are: DIPLOMACY, which allows him to ask for more money and items during negotiation; FUNDRAISING, which allows him to ask for large amounts of money; MANIPULATION, which raises the chances of being given a rare item; MIND CONTROL, which occasionally allows him to automatically win at the negotiation without negotiating; and CHARISMATIC SPEECH, which allows him to even negotiate with enemies of a higher level/power than himself.
COUNCILLOR: The Councillor confidant teaches Ren to use DETOX DX, which sometimes allows Ren to immediately recover from a status ailment (think sleep, rage, etc, usual JRPG things); MINDFULNESS, which sometimes restores Ren's magical power when it's low; and QUICK FLOW, which sometimes ups his physical and magical attacks at the start of a battle.
FAITH: The Faith confidant teaches Ren to use TUMBLING, which allows him to avoid being surrounded by enemies, and CHAINES HOOK, which allows him to attack enemies from a distance with his grappling hook in order to ambush them.
PERSONA USER: Like all party members, Ren can utilize Persona (think summon spirits that allow their users to use 8 unique skills or spells) in battle. They're basically his world's answer to magic. Unlike other party members, Ren has the WILD CARD ability, which allows him to use different personas, rather than just the one initial one. He is able to hold within himself 12 PERSONAS (i.e. 12 combos of 8 spells/skills) maximum, and can only change them out once per "turn" in battle. To clarify, this means he can't use the spells of any persona except the one he has equipped at that moment, and has to cycle through them to access other spells, but can only do so sparingly. Usually he can utilize an in-game location known as the Velvet Room to create and summon even more persona, but for purposes of the application he'd just be locked to his last internal set of spells.
PERSONAL EFFECTS: Grappling hook, eternal lockpick (it doesn't break), Nataraja R gun, Paradise Lost R dagger, Joker outfit, casual clothes, school bag...
PRIZED POSSESSION: His Persona mask! It's the white mask he wears as Joker.
